Cornerstones within Don Bosco youth work are the summer oratories and playgrounds: As a Don Bosco oratorio/playground is open to everybody, the working method is a model for inclusion; childern and young people from all social classes, with mental or physical disabilities, from different kinds of institutions, … attend each year and play together. These « summer oratories » are runned by young volunteers, which learn experiece-based competences like leadership, sense of responsibility, communication skills, etc. Since the start of the network in 2001 our partner organisations are exchanging volunteers during the summer months. In this way the volunteers experience the differences in methodology, culture, … in the hosting country, on top of the “normal” experience. The volunteers will take the expertise back to their local organisation and will share the good practices they’ve learned. Also the host organisations will learn and benefit from the practices of the volunteer. This is the full intercultural dimension of the activity.
