Volunteer - Key to the Future is the title of a project we are running at this moment in the network. But it is not just a title of this particular project. Actually it is the foundation of our network. All news from the network of this edition refers to actions of our volunteers which make sure that the engine of our network keeps on running. But the same counts for the projects of our partners in this edition. All of them are either create for or by volunteers. The individual efforts of our volunteers are something which needs to be recognised and encouraged. One of the ways how we can do this is by offering our volunteers individual learning experiences, which will help them into reaching their full potential. EU offers many opportunities for these learning experiences. Through focussing the dossier on all individual mobility actions within the educational field, we want to give a wider perspective on the different option to offer our volunteers such learning experiences. Like the inspirational text of Francis the Sales underlines, through our accompaniment of our volunteers in their individual learning process, we can hand-in-hand build a future for our network, but at the same time for all young people giving their time voluntarily to the network. In other terms, our volunteers are Key to our Future. Rein Meus, General Secretary DBYN

European Youth Congress "Volunteer - Key to the Future" From the 10th till the 13th of March, over 50 young people from all over Europe gathered for the European Youth Congress "Volunteer - Key to the Future". Throughout the intensive programme the participants could share their opinions on challenges they are facing in their work as volunteers. The programme first focussed on getting a clear definition of which those challenges are exactly. We hoped that the participants could share these challenges with policy makers we invited. Unfortunately all policy makers cancelled their participation. More info: http://www.donboscoyouth.net/node/718 & http://keytothefuture.edicypages.com/

My experience in India - Chantelle Camilleri On the 14th November 2010 I left Malta to make one of my greatest dreams come true: that of doing voluntary work in India. Admittedly, during my flight I felt rather anxious. Questions like 'What will I find there?' and 'Will I make it for 5 months on my own?' kept going round my head. But I need not have feared: my 5-month voluntaryexperience in India has been the most rewarding one in my life, thus far. More info: http://www.donboscoyouth.net/node/730
A large part of the Lifelong Learning Programme consists of individual mobility actions. The most known for youth work organisations is the European Voluntary Service or EVS. However there are many more individual mobility possibilities within Lifelong learning. This dossier wants to offer an overview of possibilities both for sending as for hosting. There are mainly 2 types of individual mobility actions. One could say the first is for ‘EU citizens', the second for professionals working in the field of internationalisation with ‘EU citizens'. The aim for the mobility actions for the first group is to offer a European learning experience to the participants. The aim for the mobility actions for the second group is to support and improve the quality of the European learning experience of the first group. For this dossier we are using the EU opportunities funding database of Eurodesk as a resource. If you are interested in getting more detailed information on the actions presented, you can contact your local Eurodesk office, which has the task to provide information on European policies and opportunities for young people and those who work with them. The Youth in Action programme offers 3 opportunities. Action 2 of the programme is better known as European Voluntary Service or EVS, which allows young people to get a voluntary work experience within a non-formal learning setting. This can be in a youth work organisation, in retreat houses, in environmental projects, ... More info: http://www.eurodesk.eu/edesk/SearchDb.do?go=2&progId=EU0010000035&country=EU&show Next to this there is under action 4.3 support measures the opportunity for a youth worker to carry out a job shadowing project in another youth work organisation for a short period of time. The aim is to get a work experience in another organisation, of which you can bring back good practices to your sending organisation. Recently a new possibility has been added under 4.3c, which is called Support to youth workers mobility and exchanges. This can be considered as a kind of internship for youth workers in another youth work organisation, which can last up to 6 months. The Erasmus programme is maybe the most famous of all mobility projects. Most young people who have been a student have either taken part in an Erasmus student mobility project or knows fellow students who did. However, in the Erasmus programme it is not only possible to study abroad, but to do an internship in an organisation of company as well. For the teaching professionals there is only the opportunity for doing a short term staff mobility project of maximum 6 weeks, working either in higher education institutions or in enterprises. More info: http://www.eurodesk.eu/edesk/SearchDb.do?go=2&progId=EU0010000005&country=EU&show Due to the success of the Erasmus programme some "spin-offs" were created over the years. Amongst these spin-offs the Erasmus mundus is an opportunity for student mobility outside of the European borders. Grundtvig is the programme for adult education. It can be considered as the counterpart of Youth in Action, but focussing on adult and senior citizens. Grundtvig equals to Youth in Action, as Senior Volunteering projects (SVP) equal to European voluntary service (EVS). Senior citizens get the opportunity to spend maximum 8 weeks active as a volunteer in another European country. Grundtvig assistantships gives staff involved in adult education to spend a period of maximum 10 months weeks as an assistant at an adult education organisation in another European country. If you read this overview carefully it becomes clear that throughout the Youth in Action and Lifelong learning programmes there is a consistent approach in individual mobility actions. In each programme there is a long term opportunity for the target group of the funding programme. For the professionals working with this target groups, there is always a short-term job shadowing option and a long term assistantship option. In order to make the right choice it is important understanding who your target group is you are working with. Next to the EU funding programmes there are many possibilities for young people to carry out traineeships and internships at European and International institutions. Use the search engine on www.eurodesk.eu to get detailed information on how to do a traineeships for example at the Economic and Social Committee or at the European Parliament, or an internship for example at the Anna Lindh Foundation or the European Central bank.
Being child like Act like small children who, with one hand hold tight to their Father, and with the other lean in to pick berries from among the thorn hedges. In the same way, as you manage the ordinary things of each day, hold fast with on e hand to your Father and, from time to time, turn to your Father to see if your actions are pleasing Him. Take care not to let go of that hand in order to gather more. If you let go, you may well fall flat on your face. Francis de Sales - Introduction 3:10 |
